DISLOCATION INTERACTION WITH SEMICOHERENT PRECIPITATES (O PHASE) IN DEFORMED Al±Cu±Mg±Ag ALLOY

چکیده

ÐThe interaction between dislocations and semicoherent precipitates (O phase) is discussed. The investigation shows that the semicoherent precipitate is cut by dislocations during deformation. Conventional TEM and HRTEM observations demonstrate that shearing of precipitates by dislocations occurs by multiple cutting of the precipitate. A strengthening mechanism is proposed based on this observation. The general theory is not only applicable to the O precipitate in Al±Cu±Mg±Ag alloys, but also to semicoherent precipitates in other alloys. # 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc. In a recent paper, Li and Wawner [1] reported results of a study of the interaction between dislocations and {111}a precipitate plates of V (Al2Cu) phase in a plastically deformed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy using both conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Based on experimental observations that V phase was sheared in plastically-deformed samples, they propose a stren...

Clustering and Segregation of Mg and Ag Atoms during the Precipitation Processes in Al(-Li)-Cu-Mg-Ag Alloys

This paper reports three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) results of solute clusters and precipitates in early aging stages of Al-Cu(-Li) alloys containing small amounts of Ag and Mg atoms. In an as-quenched Al-1.9Cu-0.3Mg-0.2Ag (at.%) alloy, solute atoms are uniformly dissolved. On aging for 5 s at 180°C, Ag and Mg atoms form co-clusters. These co-clusters do not have well defined shape, but they...

THREE DIMENSIONAL ATOM PROBE ANALYSIS OF PRE-PRECIPITATE CLUSTERING IN AN Al-Cu-Mg-Ag ALLOY

Trace element additions in age hardening aluminum alloys often modify precipitation products and kinetics. In the case of Al-Cu alloy, combined addition of trace amount of Mg and Ag leads to precipitation of fine and uniform dispersions of plate-like Ω phase on the {111}Al planes in addition to the θ′ precipitates on the {001}Al planes [1,2]. The Ω phase shows high thermal stability and resista...

Preprint of a manuscript submitted to Acta Materialia EVOLUTION OF W PHASE IN AN Al-Cu-Mg-Ag ALLOY Ð A THREE DIMENSIONAL ATOM PROBE STUDY

Evolution of plate-like precipitate of the W phase in an Al-1.9Cu-0.3Mg-0.2Ag (at.%) alloy has been investigated by three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. In an as-quenched alloy, all solute atoms are uniformly dissolved. After 5 s aging at 180¡C, coclusters of Ag and Mg atoms are present. Initially, these co-clusters do not have well defined ...

Effect of Pre-existing Nano Sized Precipitates on Microstructure and Mechanical Property of Al-0.2wt% Sc Highly Deformed by ARB Process

The effect of pre-existing nano sized precipitates on the mechanisms and rate of grain refinement has been investigated during the severe plastic deformation. A binary Al–0.2Sc alloy, containing coherent Al3Sc particles, of 3.62 nm in diameter has been deformed by accumulative roll bonding up to 10 cycles. The resulting deformed structures were quantitatively analyzed using electron backscatter...
